 Impact on Employees FAQ

Return on Investment for the Employee - Can it be reported?

The impact of the information provided to the employee as a direct result of completing the Wellness Checkpoint® questionnaire has been assessed several ways:
Does the Wellness Checkpoint® help motivate employees to make positive lifestyle changes?
This question defined one of the research objectives of a non-randomized controlled trial commissioned by DuPont Europe to evaluate the acceptance of Wellness Checkpoint® by factory workers at its plant in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. Conducted in 1995 by Dr. Antoinette Schiller, the results of the study were published in June 1996 in the occupational health journal Arbeidsomstandigheden 72(1996) nr 6. The positive response by the employees in the experimental group was a major factor in DuPont's decision to expand the use of Wellness Checkpoint® to new sites in Europe, as well as in Asia Pacific, UK, Central and South America.

The research evaluated both process and effect. The Effect Evaluation traced how far Wellness Checkpoint® contributes to the positive motivation to change lifestyle. The Process Evaluation provided insight into the employee's appreciation of both the form and the content of the system. Highlights of the study findings include:

  • The program was attributed with an increased sense of responsibility of the individual for his or her own health.
  • Wellness Checkpoint® has led to increased support by the spouse of the employee for changes in lifestyle, sun exposure and exercise. As well, there was a greater level of support by co-workers for changes in lifestyle, particularly eating habits. Slightly more than 80% of the employees discussed the health risk profile at home and over 85% discussed the results with their co-workers.
  • Wellness Checkpoint® contributes positively to employees' motivation to change an unhealthy lifestyle.
Can Wellness Checkpoint® track the impact on employee behavior and associated health risk over time?
Wellness Checkpoint® maintains a complete history of all assessments initiated and completed over time. For example, analysis of one group's assessment profiles over a four year period showed that 60% of employees reduced or maintained their risk associated with modifiable lifestyle factors, with 47% decreasing and 13% maintaining their overall lifestyle related risk scores.
What kind of employee feedback do we have that supports Wellness Checkpoint®?
In 2000, a client of ours conducted a formal feedback survey of 796 employees who had completed the Wellness Checkpoint® at three locations. The overall response rate to the survey was 65% with one site showing a 75% response rate. Responding to the question: "If there were areas of your lifestyle that needed to be modified, how satisfied were you with the information you were supplied?" 94% selected "Excellent" (14%), "Very Good" (53%), or "Good" (27%). All respondents indicated they would recomment the Health Risk Assessment to their colleagues at work.
